At least 4,000 local and international delegates are expected to attend the 36th convention and exhibition on the oil and gas industry organized by the Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC). The three-day convention will run from May 23 to 25.

The delegates include key domestic and international industry players, CEOs of the oil and gas industry, government officials, chambers of commerce and experts.

IPA president Elisabeth Proust says that the 36th IPA Convention and Exhibition (Convec) is aimed at providing an open dialogue platform for industry stakeholders and also act as a “bridge between the industry and policymakers to address both opportunities and challenges faced by the industry and to come up with the best possible solutions for the benefit of all stakeholders”.

“Indonesia is growing fast and needs continued supplies of energy to fuel this growth. But most of Indonesia’s oil and gas producing areas located in the western areas of the country are now mature and are showing declining production levels,” Proust said.

“The trend is towards new developments and explorations in the eastern areas of Indonesia, often in remote, deepwater locations requiring large-scale capital investment and technological expertise to unlock potential reserves,” said Proust, who is also CEO of Total E&P Indonesie.

The Convex carries the theme “Working Together to Meet Indonesia’s Energy Needs”.

The theme is highly relevant to Indonesia given that the focus of the industry today is to maximize production at existing mature exploration sites and to boost the exploration and development of Indonesia’s potential energy reserves, which are mainly located in the frontier areas, according to Proust.

Therefore, topics to be discussed during the plenary session will include Indonesia’s current and future energy needs, Creating an environment to meet demand and Working together to achieve Presidential Instruction No. 2/2012.

According to Proust, the event will bring together key industry players, including senior government officials from relevant institutions, CEOs of the oil and gas industry and other experts to “share their views and provide new ideas on how all industry’s stakeholders can work together in collaboration to secure the country’s future energy needs for the benefit of the people of Indonesia”.

The 3 Cs

“The IPA believes that, in order for the oil and gas industry to continue to supply energy to support Indonesia’s economic growth, it is necessary for all interested stakeholders in the sector, from government institutions, central and local government representatives, NGOs and communities, as well as the industry itself, to focus on the 3 Cs — Consultation, Cooperation and Coordination,” said Proust.

Meanwhile, IPA vice president Sammy Hamzah said that under the theme, stakeholders are expected to come to address the need for the required levels of consultation, cooperation and coordination.

“In this regard, we would like to welcome the recent Presidential Instruction No. 2/2012, and to highlight the need for further cooperation to ensure Indonesia can reach its energy goals,” said Hamzah.

Presidential Instruction No. 2/2012 on the enhancement of national oil production details the call for cooperation among relevant ministries, agencies and local governments to increase production. “The presidential instruction was issued early this year but it has yet to have an effect in the field. We’ll discuss the issue and how the instruction can be carried out, which will help increase oil and gas production,” he said.

The Convex is set to feature more than 100 exhibitors from the oil and gas industry and various other sectors, including service companies, contractors, government bodies, media and chambers of commerce, who will showcase the latest technologies and industry best practices.

As many as 105 oral papers will be presented, which will emphasize the achievements and the breakthroughs of the latest developments within the industry, which will be delivered in 30 technical sessions and 42 poster sessions.

“We are delighted with the enthusiastic response from the industry and relevant stakeholders to this year’s convention and exhibition,” said Mochamad Harun, chairman of the 36th IPA Convention and Exhibition.

The public and key industry stakeholders will also be given the opportunity to obtain firsthand knowledge of current issues and trends by meeting with key players in the oil and gas industry in Indonesia.

Cinema presentation

Apart from that, this year the IPA will present the “Empowerment Center” in the exhibition area, featuring educational cinema presentations that show the process of oil and gas exploration and production and the PSC concept in Indonesia.

The Empowerment Center will also exhibit the achievements of small local entrepreneurs that have been empowered by the industry and visual presentations of the industry’s CSR activities throughout the archipelago.

The upstream oil and gas industry is committed to developing Indonesian communities by focusing on four pillars: economic empowerment, education, infrastructure and health. This year, the industry is recognizing the talents and interests of industry players and the community in the area of photography. For the first time, the IPA is staging a photo competition with the theme “Oil and Gas for All of Us”.

The IPA is a non-profit organization founded in 1971 that aims to bring key players in Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas industries together to promote partnerships and communication within an industry that plays a vital role in Indonesia’s national development.
